ECUADOR Eats : Yummm!

Located off the Pacific coast, Ecuador is known for its great seafood, as well as succulent meat dishes. Good for me because I’m pescatarian (a fishy vegetarian). Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, I wasn’t out and about as much to various restaurants. I didn’t have the opportunity to sample a good variety of foods; I especially missed my usual street food foray. Here’s an overview of the Eats enjoyed in Guayaquil and Cuenca restos, as well as Quito home deliveries thanks to UberEats.

Guayaquil : My first meal in Ecuador was at El Rincon del Ceviche; a place I found on the walk to the grocery store.
Guayaquil : Ceviche is almost a national dish in Ecuador and they also love their seafood soups such as the yummy Encebollado stew.
Guayaquil : Shrimp and fish ceviche; surprisingly slightly sweet sauce; the glass on upper left has a shot of juice that tasted a bit like lemonade concentrate... an unexpected delicious condiment!
Guayaquil : Seafood Empanadas wrapped in a perfect flakey crisp crust!
Guayaquil : Delicious seafood empanadas with a buttery tartar sauce.
Guayaquil : The most amazing ceviche ! Sauce a little sweeter than I prefer, but still flavorful and packed with seafood.
Guayaquil : 'Puss in Yellow Boots' is the doorman for the restaurant; he unlocks it when customers arrive and provides umbrella coverage too!
Guayaquil : Lunch time starts late here, when I arrived 12:45 it was almost empty.
Guayaquil : ! Supermercado ! Just a 10 min walk from my AirBnB.
Guayaquil : No empty shelves here; plenty of toilet paper!
Guayaquil : Similar to the Europe, eggs are not refrigerated.
Guayaquil : My grocery haul was $30.56 of bread, cheese, yoghurt & fruit. It will probably last the five days I’ll be here; plus a little extra for the 3.5 hour road trip to Cuenca. The local chocolate is for me. Hey! The welcome sign at the airport states, “The Land of Fine Cocoa.” The imported Ferro Rocha chocolate is gift for my host; I think they’ll like something different than the local. I buy hospitality gifts upon arrival to save room in my luggage.
Guayaquil : Piqueos y Mariscos (Snacks & Seafood)
Guayaquil : Restaurants often serve these snacks with the meal; in the states it’s bread or tortilla chips. The corn kernels are not burned; like corn nuts they are very crunchy, but these are hollow inside.
Guayaquil : Arroz con Mariscos was very plentiful, but not much flavor or seafood. The tostones (called 'patatones' here) were great! Twice fried plantains are my favorite home (Belize) food; these did not disappoint!
Guayaquil : Yes, Cafe Bombon's is French, but it was the most appealing place I found on the Malecón 2000.
Guayaquil : Cafe Bombon's outdoor seating.
Guayaquil : Hummm, Spinach Quiche in Ecuador how bad can that be?
Guayaquil : This quiche was very good ! Much better than expected. A very solid slice, but appetizingly packed full of spinach and cheese; nice crust too.
Guayaquil : Berry Torte was moist and yummy, has a bit of tres leches.
Guayaquil : Yassss, here comes the tres leches!
